TUNER FILTER MODS
Over the years I’ve done a few filter mods. The process consists of taking the covers off of an old analog FM tuner, unsoldering the stock ceramic filters (which most likely are very wide) and replacing them with much more narrow filters (180khz, 150khz, 110khz, etc) and replacing the covers. This process makes it much easier to hear weaker stations right next to strong local FM station. This procedure was a major breakthrough in the 80s for FM DXing.
I still have some narrow filters laying around (4/1/2026) so if you want one or two, just email me.
I’m keeping this page up for the few audiophiles still interested in filter mods. Analog tuners are now out of favor with today’s FM DXers and now software defined radios reign supreme because of their amazing variable selectivity. All of my DXing is done with an Airspy HD Discovery+ SDR and an RSP Duo Phasing SDR from SDRPlay.
The following list of tuners shows some of the analog tuners I’ve modified in the past. Please don’t ask me for more information on any of these because I no longer have them. All but the Onkyo tuner are gone and I only use the Onkyo to listen to, not to DX.
